Opening Sequence

Fade In

INT. – RACHEL’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

RACHEL, twenty, is sitting at the desk and is typing on her laptop. RACHEL’S mobile phone is next to the laptop. The main light is off, but a lamp on top of the desk, is on.
RACHEL’S phone rings. RACHEL picks up the phone and sees that SCOTT, nineteen, is ringing her. RACHEL smiles as she answers the phone.

RACHEL
Hey, you.

SCOTT (o/s)
Hey, Rachel.

RACHEL
What are you up to?

SCOTT (o/s)
Not much. (pauses) I’m breaking up with you.

RACHEL
What? Why? If it’s something you don’t like about me, I can change.

SCOTT (o/s)
It’s not you, Rachel. It’s me. I’m just not ready for a serious relationship.

RACHEL
We can take things slow.

SCOTT (o/s)
My mind’s made up. I’m sorry, Rachel...

Cut to
INT. – CAFE – MORNING

RACHEL is sitting at a table on her own with her mobile phone in her hands. Her handbag is in front of her. ANNA, twenty, stands at the table with two hot chocolates in her hands.
She places them on the table as RACHEL places her handbag on the floor. ANNA also sits at the table. They each take a sip of their hot chocolate. Silence.

ANNA
He’s an arsehole. You should forget about him.

RACHEL
He happens to be the arsehole I spent the past year dating. (pauses) That reminds me.

RACHEL opens her handbag and brings out a card, which is entitled to ANNA. She passes it to ANNA.

RACHEL (continued)
Happy birthday.

ANNA opens the birthday card and reads through the message.

ANNA
Aw, thank you.

ANNA leans across the table and hugs RACHEL.

ANNA (continued)
You are still coming tonight, aren’t you?

RACHEL
Yeah. Yeah, I’ll be there.

RACHEL smiles.

Cut to
EXT. – ANNA’S FRONT GARDEN – EVENING

Music can be heard playing loudly from inside the house. RACHEL stops at the edge of the front garden with a bottle of wine in her hands. She looks at the front of the house and sighs. She walks towards the front door.

Cut to
INT. – ANNA’S HALLWAY – EVENING

Teens are standing in small groups and are talking to each other. The doorbell goes.
ANNA stumbles out of the living room with a half-empty bottle of vodka in her hands. The doorbell goes again. ANNA opens the front door and sees RACHEL standing in the doorway of the house.

ANNA (excitedly)
Rachel!

RACHEL
(smiles) Hey.

RACHEL steps inside the house and closes the front door.

ANNA
Come.

ANNA walks towards the living room.

RACHEL
Wait...

ANNA walks inside the living room. RACHEL sighs.

Cut to
INT. – ANNA’S LIVING ROOM – EVENING

Drunken teens are dancing to the music, which is playing from the stereo. ANNA pushes her way into the crowd and begins dancing. RACHEL stands before ANNA.
It is obvious that she does not fit in with the crowd. ANNA takes a mouthful of vodka and faces RACHEL.

ANNA (loudly)
Dance!

RACHEL
I’m fine.

ANNA
Come on!

ANNA attempts to force RACHEL to dance, but RACHEL steps away from her. RACHEL looks to the living room door and spots SCOTT and GIRL 1 walking inside the room. They are holding hands. RACHEL turns back to face ANNA.

RACHEL
I’m gonna go.

ANNA looks to the door and sees SCOTT and GIRL 1 standing beside each other. SCOTT surveys the crowd and spots RACHEL standing beside ANNA. He speaks to GIRL 1 and they exit the room. CODY, eighteen, makes his way inside the room.
His outfit is smart casual and has a pair of glasses on. He looks around the room and makes eye contact with RACHEL. She casually looks away. CODY smiles and makes his way across the room. He stands before RACHEL.

CODY
Hi.

Cut to
INT. – ANNA’S KITCHEN/DINING ROOM – EVENING

RACHEL opens the cupboard next to the fridge and brings out two wine glasses. She closes the cupboard and places the wine glasses on the table, whilst CODY opens the bottle of wine.
He fills each glass with wine and places the bottle on the table. CODY and RACHEL each pick up a glass.

CODY
Cheers.

RACHEL
Cheers.

CODY and RACHEL perform a toast and take a mouthful of wine.

RACHEL (continued)
What’s your name?

CODY
Cody. You?

RACHEL
Rachel.

SCOTT walks inside the room. RACHEL stands with her back to SCOTT as he walks towards her.

SCOTT
Rachel. Hey.

RACHEL
Scott.

SCOTT
I wasn’t expecting to see you here. How are you?

RACHEL
Fine.

CODY
I should go.

RACHEL
No. You stay. Scott was just leaving.

SCOTT sighs. He turns and walks out of the room. Silence.

RACHEL (reluctantly)
My ex.

They each take a mouthful of wine. SCOTT stands in the doorway of the room.

SCOTT
Your friend’s throwing up.

SCOTT turns and walks back out of the room.

RACHEL
(sighs) Great.

CODY
I’ll get the bucket.

Cut to
INT. – ANNA’S BATHROOM – EVENING

ANNA is on her knees and is vomiting in the toilet. RACHEL is crouching beside ANNA is rubbing her back. CODY is standing with the washing up bowl in his hands. ANNA wipes the vomit away from her mouth with her hands.

ANNA
I’m okay now.

RACHEL
Try and stay off the alcohol.

RACHEL flushes the chain and helps ANNA to her feet. ANNA quickly turns around and vomits inside the toilet.

RACHEL (continued)
It’s time we took you to bed.

Cut to
INT. – ANNA’S UPSTAIRS HALLWAY – EVENING

CODY is standing with his back against the wall. He brings out his mobile phone and checks the time. He puts the phone away as ANNA’S bedroom door opens and RACHEL emerges from the room. She gently closes the door.

RACHEL
I’m really sorry you had to witness that.

CODY
It’s fine. Don’t worry about it.

Cut to
INT. – ANNA’S KITCHEN – EVENING

CODY and RACHEL are standing next to the sink, talking to each other. CODY has a can of beer in his hands, which he is drinking. RACHEL has a half-empty bottle of vodka in her hands, which she is also drinking. She is visibly drunk.
There are drunken teens passionately kissing inside the room and the music can be heard playing from inside the living room.

RACHEL
Do you have a girlfriend?

CODY is unable to make out what RACHEL is saying.

CODY
(loudly) What?

RACHEL
Do you have a girlfriend?

CODY
No! Do you?

RACHEL
No! I don’t have a boyfriend either.

CODY
Me neither...

They both smile to each other. CODY takes a mouthful of beer.

CODY (continued)
Wanna go for a walk?

Cut to
EXT. – STREET – NIGHT

CODY and RACHEL are walking slowly down the street. RACHEL is performing a balancing act along the kerb while CODY is texting on his mobile phone. RACHEL is visibly drunk.

RACHEL
(faces CODY) Who are you texting?

No one.

CODY puts his phone away. Silence.

RACHEL
I’ve enjoyed tonight. Being with you.

CODY
(smiles) It’s been great.

ADAM’S car suddenly stops behind them. The driver’s and the
front passenger’s doors open and TJ and ADAM, both twenty, get out of the car. TJ has a baseball bat in his hands.
TJ walks to RACHEL and hits her round the back of the head with the baseball bat. Fade to black.
